Attaching covering letters - There is some debate on the usefulness of these, some recruiters say that they give an indication of a candidates literacy, while other recruiters say that they never even read them and skip straight to the CV... Nevertheless, it is important to attach at least a short note on what role you are applying for and perhaps a brief outline of why you are interested, but keep it brief. Covering letters do not have to be hand written, they look better word processed. Also, if you have previously had a conversation with the recruiter, mention this, it may assist your application.

Meeting with a recruitment consultant is only the beginning of the search for a new job, it's essential that you keep in regular contact with your consultant, informing them of your progress and of any changes in your situation. A weekly phone call or email is a good way of keeping in contact.

At the interview - Look the part - dress appropriately for the interview find out what the dress code for the organisation is, and if in doubt dress smartly. Dressing too casually can be a major faux pas, it may be taken as a lack of effort or interest on your part. Take care of the details, make sure your hands and nails are clean, your shoes are polished and don't smoke immediately before an interview, the smell often lingers on your clothes. Make sure you leave the right impression.
